Students denied lectures because of a conference?

According to reports reaching me, Economics 3oolevel students have not been having lectures since Monday and even the 200level students have only been having just one or two. I hear it is because most of their lecturers went for a conference, what kind of department is that? Should students be denied lectures as a result of any sort of conference? I mean, not after paying such an outrageous amount of money as school fees.
